• Biome: Atlantic Rain Forest - Iguaçu River Valley

The Atlantic Forest is a very diverse and complex biome. In the highest altitudes, one can find the typical Araucaria Pine Trees. On the lowest altitudes, one can find palm trees and even mangroves. Our Wildflower honey comes from areas around the Iguaçu River, including the world-famous Iguaçu Waterfalls, the largest waterfalls system in the world. This area characterized by humid sub-tropical climate, with two distinctive seasons; one very humid and hot in the summer and another, humid and warm, in the winter. The region is home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, among them the giant otter and the giant anteater.

• People

70% of the Brazilian population lives in some sub region of the Atlantic Forest, which was the first environment that the Portuguese colonizers encountered over 500 years ago.

• Environmental issues

The incorporation of modern human societies and their needs for forest resources has greatly reduced the size of the Atlantic Forest, which has resulted in species impoverishment. Almost 90% of the original forest habitat has been lost and replaced by human-modified landscapes including pastures, croplands, and urban areas.
Currently there are about 10% of the native forest. Most of the remnants of forest are small fragments isolated from each other. This biome has 75.6% of endangered and endemic species in Brazil, making it one of the most important conservation priorities in the country.

 

• Curiosities about the plants and importance of beekeeping

During early summer, bees forage the nectar from many flowers like Vassourao, Branquilio and Maria-mole. Although the honey coming from each plant has their special characteristics, flavor and colors, we chose the wildflower version because we believe it expresses the terroir of this unique biome.
